Zion Effs Interview by Mark Gonzales

Hi, Zion. First of all, what's your name?
My name is Zion Effs.
How old are you?
I'm 16 years old.
Where were you born?
I was born and raised in Miami. Where were you born, Mark?
I was born in Huntington Park, California.
Oh really? I thought you were born in New York.
I wasn't born in New York, but I live in New York now. What do you think of New York?
I think it's cool. You can ride your bike around everywhere; you don't really need a car. I like how you can just get around by skating.
So do you like skating in the parking lot of Lot 11 or the skatepark on the side?
I like the far side of the park—because I can skate the ramps and stuff. But the parking lot is sick. What do you think?
I like the parking lot. What's the first trick you learned, if you remember?
I think it was a no comply or an ollie.
Was it hard to learn an ollie? Some people really stress on it.
Yeah, it took me a minute. Just getting my balance and stuff. But once I got that, it was pretty easy.
What do you do when you're not skating?
I'm usually playing basketball with Jax or video games or something. Mario Kart’s dope—I play on the Switch. You play Mario Kart?
Sometimes. My son has it—he’s got a Switch.
Yeah, Jax is better than me at it.
Do you watch basketball a lot?
Not really. I like playing it more than watching.
Can you shoot threes?
Yeah, I’ve got a pretty good shot.
I like stealing the ball.
That’s your favorite part?
Yeah, I think so.
My defense is kinda bad. I need to work on it.

I watch basketball a lot.
Really? Who’s your favorite team?
I don’t know. I was into the Clippers. They beat Golden State.
The Clippers are sick. They got James Harden.
Yeah.
Or wait—no, that’s the 76ers. Who do the Clippers have—Kawhi?
They have Harden.
They do?
Yeah.
I thought he was on the 76ers. That’s dope. When did they beat the Warriors?
Last night or the night before. I watched it. It was funny.
That’s sick. The Warriors are a good team.
I know. They’ve got that one guy—the three-point king.
Steph Curry. He's tough.
So what’s next for you? Any projects you’re working on?
Not sure yet. I’m trying to stack footage and drop a video part, but I don’t know what it’s gonna be for yet. I’ll figure it out soon.
What’s the last trick you learned?
Switch hardflips. They took me a minute, but I just got them. What about you?
I don’t know. Last trick I did was a nollie shove-it to 50-50. Not sure about the last one I actually learned.
What was the first trick you learned?
A Daffy. It’s where you balance on two boards—one in front, one in the back.
Like a manual but with two boards?
Yeah, I learned that in the ’70s. It’s called a Daffy.
Damn. That’s a funny name for a trick. What’s next for you?
I’m going to Japan for an art show in Tokyo on May 9th. I haven’t been skating—just making work for the show.
Oh, it’s all for that? I’ve never been to Japan. You been before?
Yeah, a lot. I love it there. They’ve got the bullet train; it’s super fast.
I want to go on that. Japan looks sick—futuristic. I gotta make my way over there one day.
You’ll love it. Do you have any advice for young skaters just starting out?
Hmm … I don’t know. What about you?
Just have fun with it.
Yeah. Don’t get mad if you can’t land something. I get frustrated a lot. It’d be better if I didn’t—but it happens.

You ever focus boards?
I just got strong enough to, so I started doing it. But I need to stop. Sometimes you just hit that point. But, yeah, don’t get frustrated. That’s the main thing.
What’s your favorite part of Miami—not skating related?
Favorite part, I don’t wanna say the beach because I don’t go there, but that’s most people’s answer. What about you?
The food. I like Versailles. There’s also this Spanish place—I forget the name. What’s the one we went to? Puerto Sagua?
Yeah. Miami’s got a lot of Cuban food too.
Yeah. What’s your favorite spot?
Probably my mom’s restaurant—Morgan’s. I go there a lot. Did you skate the bowl at the new store?
Not yet. You did, right? I saw you at the opening—it was hectic.
Yeah, I skated it. It’s kinda hard but really fun once you find a line.
Okay, I’m gonna hit you with quick picks. Just choose one: BLT or PB&J?
PB&J, for sure.
Bowl of soup or spaghetti and meatballs?
Spaghetti and meatballs.
Snow cone or ice cream?
Ice cream. You can do more with it.
Zoo or aquarium?
I’d say zoo. I like seeing tigers and lions.
Tortoise or fish?
Fish. I like to go fishing.
My daughter has a tortoise—she’s wondering why you didn’t say tortoise.
Oh shit, maybe tortoise. Nah, I like fish. Tortoises are cool though—I used to have two.
Alright, Zion, it was cool talking to you.
Yeah, that was dope. Peace, Mark!
Bye, Zion.
